What are the requirements for importing gas masks and filters.
Gas masks are defense articles subject to regulation under the Arms Export Control Act. The Alcohol,Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) regulates the importation of gas masks and you are required to obtain an import permit to lawful import them. An importer wishing to import them for commercial purposes, such as resale, must first be registered with ATF. You can download the registration application form (4587) from their from the ATF web site. There is a registration fee and the processing time is 2-4 weeks. Once you receive a registration number you must submit to ATF, by mail, an ATF Form 6 with the registration number. This form is the permit application. The processing time to receive the Form 6 back is 4-6 weeks after it is received by the Firearms and Explosives Imports Branch. You can download the Form 6 . After you receive the approved Form 6 from ATF, you must submit it to U.S. Customs and Border Protection with your entry documents. If you are importing gas masks for personal use (in very small quantities), you do not have to register with ATF, however, you must still submit the Form 6 to ATF, by mail, in order to get approval to import them.
